BKHM --- ouch!

Okay, on a brighter note, FiberOptics Online has a good article on four Canadian fiber optics' companies, including Nortel.

He also stresses the partnerships that exist with suppliers, an especially important element because of the component supply problems that have afflicted the industry. Supply constraint is the most important element to be managed and it is sometimes necessary for Nortel to send its own engineers to help speed the production of components from subcontactors. He expects component supply to remain tight for the near term.

This component shortage may seriously hinder startups in the optical space, Bolouri adds. These companies will have problems with scaling up operations for at least 2-3 years. Both the skill sets and the supply of components are limited. For example, Nortel has bought up all the optical filters it needs from JDS Uniphase for the next few years, leaving few if any unclaimed.

LightReading on Cisco, with a good analysis of terabit router space:

lightreading.com

Of interest to SDLI holders:

Demand for OC192 interfaces in IP routers is clearly growing, as demonstrated by Juniper’s latest deal with Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. (Nasdaq:MFNX), which bought 170 routers specifically for those interfaces (see Speed Key in Juniper's MFN Deal ).

One of Cisco’s biggest concerns is the shortage of components, particularly for its optical business. Kennedy says that shortages slowed down deployments this quarter, but he and Chambers emphasized the fact that the company is working closely with partners to keep up with demand. Currently, Cisco is one of the only big companies without its own component division. Alcatel, Nortel, and Lucent all have divisions that provide parts for their optical system products.
