From PC Magazine - Interesting article in August 4 edition. A vision of the future which is shared by Nortel.

"The personal area network (PAN) links devices for security, entertainment, credit, medical monitoring, transportation, and data communications. Each person's PAN connects directly to the mobile wide area network. As wide area networks become faster, more flexible, and more affordable, in many instances LANS will be unnecessary."

Yes, i think this is a really momentus acquisition for NT because it is pulling them into layer 4+ switching right into the application edge of the network where NT has traditionally not been too strong in.

With the QoS problem inherent in the Internet and the fact that the Enterprise/Local ISP-ASP lines will start to blur, it will be critical for NT to be able to offer an intelligent (content-aware) switching.

The implication goes beyond targeting simply the ISP's and ASP's who wants to differentiate service/price. With Alteon, NT will be able to crack the Fortune 1000 enterprise market who are desperately trying to move their databases, and back-end systems onto the web. By deploying content-aware switch, the enterprises will be able to interface intelligently and on a customized basis with their customers/market (one of the weak points of the Internet at this point).

Alteon is not cheap but content aware switching is a huge growth market and more importantly, this new technology will have disruptive impact on the enterprise/ISP/ASP market. For NT to be one of the leaders (along with CSCO) with a stroke of a pen means that NT is truely dedicated to providing end-to-end switching/applications from the core to the premise.
