jim, RE: The argument you are making for PE compression applies even more strongly to CSCO and SUNW than it does to DELL.
So while these companies all exhibit earning growth rates in the same ball park, DELL is clearly the better value from a PE standpoint.

jim, DELL isn't in SUNW or CSCO's league when it comes to earnings growth rates.

Last quarter, DELL had year over year earnings growth of less than 19%. The previous quarter earnings growth was less than 7%. The previous quarter earnings didn't grow at all--they declined. You have to go all the way back to the 2Q of fiscal 2000 to find earnings growth in that league. And even if DELL reports a blow out quarter of 24¢ tommorow, it still is 26% earnings growth. CSCO's growth was more than double that number.

edit: DELL fiscal Q3 was the quarter with the 7¢ extraordinary write off, so earnings from operations didn't actually decline, as I said above. Still earnings growth even if you discount the write off was 28%, still way under the earnings growth for CSCO or SUNW.

RE:DELL-My opinion is that DELL is a "unique company" still and is in transition towards becoming the single low cost provider in scaleable servers and scaleable storage units as it is now in PC's -The hedge funds may now ease up and let it climb out for a nice finish and a respectable/ "streetable" year-end price. They arn't exactly making anymore DELLs!Stock feels like it's setting us up for a nice "after earnings bump/up"!"Could well be wrong-haven't done to well lately".

From an industry standpoint, dell is in a much worse, commodity only industry

Sun & Csco are specialized in specific niches, and going great because of it..

A pc is a PC...

Big deal. I would buy a dell but there is not much product differenciation

sun has 40% growth rate and cisco just got 61%..

Dell will have .... 25% maybe ?

Take care
