FP article August 12, 2000

Laketon is market weight the technology, media and telecom sector in the United States and slightly under market weight in Europe.

In the United States, the Laketon team recommends:

- ADC Telecommunications Inc. (ADCT/NASDAQ) US$42 3/8 (US$49-US$8 9/16). Based in Minnetonka, Minn., this company makes broadband connectivity products that enable telephone companies to deliver voice, video and data services to their business customers. It also sells telecom products to cable TV operators.

"Although the stock has already doubled this year, we think there is more to come," Grober says. While the P/E of 50 times on next years earnings may seem high, it is only 1.5 times the company's prospective growth rate. In contrast, the tech sector as a whole has a multiple of two times the prospective earnings growth rate of the companies, he notes.

In Europe, the team selects:

- Alcatel SA ADRs (ALA/NYSE) US$71 7/8 (US$76 3/4-US$26 1/16). The Paris-based producer of telecom equipment and cables is likely to spin off its cable business and then its optical business into separate entities to emerge as a pure play on telecom equipment, Speck says. Alcatel's purchase of Newbridge Networks Corp. of Kanata, Ont., will certainly enhance its tech portfolio, he notes.

Speck has taken profits in some major telecom stocks in Europe, such as Deutsche Telekom AG ADRs (DT/NYSE), US$44 (US$100 1/4-US$39 1/2) and France Telecom SA ADRs (FTE/NYSE) US$126 1/2 (US$205 15/16-US$67).

Question: Pat, Zbyslaw, Steve -- anyone

The OPEN DSL standardization was announced on August 7. It aims at an open plug-and-play architecture for
automated configuration of DSL CPE -- to eliminate truck rolls for installation.

Question -- just about every company involved in DSL that I can think of has joined the OPEN DSL initiative -- including TI, CSCO, EFNT, VRTA, WSTL, INTC, etc. --- all EXCEPT Alcatel.

What is going on with Alcatel with respect to DSL chipsets? They have been the market leader. I have heard that they may be withdrawing from making their chipsets. I find it hard to believe, but if true, why would that be? I know they are involved in the ASAMs, the Fiber Remote deployment as well as CPE.

Can anyone shed some light on what is happening with ALA and DSL deployment with respect to chipsets and Open DSL?

Thanks,
Michael
