AMD 64-bit server Roadmap,Athlon arch speeds up to 2 GHZ
zdnet.com
AMD has made tremendous inroads with its Athlon chips this past year, but few details are available beyond assumptions that the architecture permits speeds up to 2 GHz. AMD has disclosed that the Sledgehammer (an x86 compatible chip with a new 64-bit mode) is in development and is targeted for late 2001. It may also integrate Northbridge functionality on the chip. The company's K9 chip (no "Lassie" jokes, please) is still under wraps. We'll probably see AMD following a lower-cost mainstream 32-bit path and a higher-end, x86-compatible, 64-bit server direction for at least the next five years.

I strongly doubt that amd would do anything but an intro to 64 bit platform.

What I really want is an announcement of Sledgehammer first silicon. That would be huge. It's a about the right time to.
