Thats an excellent article. Anyone who wants an understanding of what went on over there should read it.

The two events that stand out as real catalysts seem to be the assassination of Diem and the Gulf of Tonkin non-incident. I knew that McNamara and Dean Rusk knew of the plot to kill Diem, I was surprised to see Edward R. Murrows's name in there. I think we can assume that Kennedy knew, too. The article says some of his generals overthrew him, but I wonder how much involvement the CIA had in it, and who gave the order to have him killed.
