Tell that to some one that bought into the DOW in 1965 looking to retire in 17 years...they made zero return...lost with inflation.

Some times you have to get out and get out get bonds and then buy back when the valuations make sense.

Sometimes my good investments get ahead of themselves and then the stock price stagnates for awhile.
LTBH works well if you are very lucky, or diversified. It only takes a winner or two to make the whole portfolio look good. It can be depressing if you sink all your future into something that is stagnate or declining, but if you stick to relatively small positions then some will become large all by themselves while the others remain small. Overall it can be pretty good.
TP (Who hasn't added to CSCO in years, but has gained a fair position by splits).
