VA Linux rises on analyst upgrade
By Bloomberg News
August 9, 2000, 4:35 p.m. PT

VA Linux Systems shares rose 14 percent after an analyst said the maker of Linux
software and computers is seeing rising demand for some products and may move
into new markets.

VA Linux shares closed up $4.88 to $39.13, after rising as high as $41.25 during the day.

Philip Rueppel at Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown raised his rating on
the company, which makes products related to the Linux operating
system, to "strong buy" from "buy." Demand for VA Linux's server
computer products remains strong and the company probably will
expand into the growing market for storage devices, Rueppel said
in a report.

Linux competes with software from Microsoft, Sun Microsystems
and others. Shares of Linux-related companies have fallen this year
as investors reacted to concerns about the companies' ability to
derive revenue from the free operating system.

Rueppel said he expects to see renewed investor interest in
makers of Linux-related software and hardware after the LinuxWorld
conference next week in San Jose, Calif. He also said Sunnyvale,
Calif.-based VA Linux is the "best positioned" company in the
market.

Research firm IDC last month said shipments of Linux operating system
software for running servers will rise more than 28 percent a year to 4.7
million units in 2004 from 1.3 million in 1999. Linux revenue will increase 23
percent annually, though this growth will result in total revenue of only $85
million in 2004.

Aus, AMAT's earnings were not just good. The comments made in the call were unbelievably bullish. Check out this post.

This should put the semis back on a nice solid upward trajectory.

Aus - the current semiconductor cycle topped out already

Aus please if an important analyst at an important house has said that the semi-conductor cylce has topped out then it has topped out and who on earth is a mere mortal like you to query it.

There is an empircal definition of the "semi-conductor cycle" and if an analyst says it then it must be true.

All semi-conductors are covered by this rule even if they have only just come to market or there just beggining thier commercial acceptance and growth. And please stop bringing up irrelevant one offs like the recent AMAT results.

And so what if SNDK is experiencing massive growth in revenues and earnings...what on earth does that have to do with anything....

The semi-conductor cycle has topped out...Period. Thus sayeth the analysts. Down goeth the stocks.

Best regards,

L
