I have one of those modems,works for me.Yes any Network 10 NIC will work.Here is a link to 3Com,they make good ones.Of course the link is for info not purchase.

I think your problem is in your settings.With DHCP enabled I'm sure that DNS has to be disabled.Mine is that way.Of course I don't need a connection icon.like you have.Did you talk to the tech people at your ISP to double check settings?

3COM are good. SMC are good, too.

I haven't followed all the details of your problem, but a bad network card is entirely possible.

I'd definitely swap out the card before worrying about the modem.
