Hi Dave,

Re: last weekend's Barron's rated Vitesse as one of the top 2 picks to be included in the S&P 500 next time a replacement is needed.
Do you happen to recall the other candidate? TIA

Now for the real deal:

Vitesse acquires WAN product line from
Philips

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. has purchased part of the
wide-area networking division of Philips Semiconductors, a move made to bolster
Vitesse's product portfolio.

Purchased for $30 million in cash, the product lines are a step below Vitesse's normal
fare in terms of performance. But they are required in the kinds of systems Vitesse
sells to, said Chris Gardner, vice president of the telecom division at Vitesse
(Camarillo, Calif.).

"Prior to having these chips, we would send someone to PMC-Sierra," or a similar
chip vendor, to get the parts, he said.

Vitesse was interested in the Philips Semiconductors versions of the parts because
they are proven technology, all in their third generation, he said.

The first chip is a 2,048-channel HDLC controller, which delineates T1/E1 traffic into
packets or cells for feeding into a packet processor or quality-of-service engine.

The second is a 28-channel framer, which takes T1/E1 traffic and places it into Sonet
frames; a larger version of the part will carry 84 channels. The third product is a similar
terminator for DS-3 traffic.
