French is mispronounced Latin? Har de har har.

I was not speaking of Latin's being a lingua franca during the imperial period. The development of the Romance languages out of Latin was a complex process, which I don't think we need/want to go into here.

I was referring to the Middle Ages, when Latin was already essentially "dead" (not anyone's "native" language any more), and when the local vernaculars (Romance, Germanic, Scandinavian, Slavic, Finno-Ugrian, etc.) were flourishing. Latin simply provided a common medium of communication, a "unifying" link, as it were, making it possible for Germans, Frenchmen, Poles, et al. to exchange information with one another.
