Wafer fab built in under 1 year

GERMAN total facility solutions provider, M+W Zander, has set a new record in the electronics construction industry by completing a wafer fabrication plant in only 11-1/2 months.

Crediting the speedy completion of the plant for SSMC (Systems-on-Silicon Manufacturing Company) to an integrated approach, M+W Zander managing director Klaus Gaertner said: ""We reduce co-ordination barriers and increase efficiency by extending our role to one that takes hold of the full scope of the project.''

He also attributed the record to strong support from SSMC.

Wafer fabs are costly projects that usually take one to three years to build, depending on size and complexity.

SSMC's $2 billion plant, which will have a monthly capacity of 30,000 wafers, is expected to begin production by the end of next month. The 80,000 sq m plant in Pasir Ris comprises a wafer fabrication factory and administrative block.

SSMC is a joint venture of Royal Philips Electronics (48 per cent), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (32 per cent) and Economic Development Board Investments (20 per cent).

M+W Zander's previous clients include Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, Wacker Siltronic Singapore and Tech Semiconductor Singapore.
