I think that MSFT is involved in XML as far as it's utilization is concerned. SQL Server 2000 has XML support i.e. you may be able to insert/update/ data using XML schemas and vice versa (generate XML schemas based on the data in SQL Server 2000 data bases. You correctly mentioned that it uses BizTalk which in itself is an open design that relies on XML to transfer messages between applications.
