Analysts on CMVT's slide

--3:35 pm - By Tomi Kilgore
Comverse Technology (CMVT: news, msgs) sliding 5 5/16, or 6.5 percent, at 76, extending Wednesday's 11 percent decline. Although the merger between Phone.com (PHCM: news, msgs) and Software.com (SWCM: news, msgs) announced Wednesday creates a credible competitor in the next generation of carrier services, it "does not pose a direct threat" to Comverse's market, said Analyst Peter Leppik at Dain Rauscher Wessels. Meanwhile, he continues to believe the stock is "fully valued" and anything that threatens the company's ability to leverage its position could weaken it. Morgan Stanley Dean Witter's David Raezer, however, reiterated his "strong buy" rating on CMVT, saying the selloff in the stock was a "buying opportunity."
