we had a long discussion about the whisper numbers a couple of years ago. essentially WE ARE TO BLAME. wE go to sites like www.whispernumber.com and vote our whispers. I remember when this thread used to take a poll of earnings estimates and analysts, it was thought, would watch this and then derive a whisper number.
Pogo said I have met the enemy and it is us.

Hi Dorine re: So who makes up the whisper number?

Momentum Bulls and Bears push it up for money on momentum either way. 0.23 is an old whisper number before Dell dropped. Funds rely on analyst consensus numbers as do I. Dell guidance was on target and they expect 30% growth for the completed year. Everybody knows this was a tough comparison quarter for % gains. Dell is a cash king and investment earnings is one reward for those who invest in cash kings that use free cash wisely for a two pronged benefit. I expect the Dell +- price swings will dampen and bore the momentum bulls and bears. I would not be surprised if the market matures this year (bad for CNBC hypemiesters and doomsday seers). Dell will make us a boring 30% long term return.

Best,
Mike

This is happening thoroughout tech and related. AMAT had a great quarterly yesterday, a conference call that was upbeat on all cylinders and they got hammered today. There are sell-offs on earnings announcements without regard to the content of the announcement. Volume was way off on most of these stocks today. We need the sidelines money to come in and it is not doing it. The faithful, long-termers put a lot of cash in to grab the bargains and now it will have to come from elsewhere. Could the market be expecting another hike from the Fed?

Whisper numbers are made up by traders who have a fairly good feel for what a company should report in order to sustain the stock's current valuation. If a company falls shy, it will obviously head lower, unless the assurance for future quarters is better and backed up by soild product demand. Without a doubt, DELL's growth is slowing down! Stock is fairly valued now! Try
