yah - i wasnt trying to say that OPS was a partitionable database - just that for most applications customers have chosen to scale up rather than scale out IF that was an option. Other "ideal" technologies that were less than so in the real world are MPP and NUMA, They certainly didnt hurt Sun in the last few years but then again Sun has been surprising everyone with how far it has been able to push SMP technology. I understand that Serengetti will be a semi-NUMA system with a high speed optical interconnect - but you can still scale up in the box to the same # of processors before you would want to consider it. very sexy!
