<<Did the God of the court system you speak of come first or the God of fire, the sun God, etc>>

It would seem that as we began to think about the world around us the mysteries of fire sun etc. must have been a priority, explanation wise.

Since these things were beyond our concept of logical thought I would agree that magic or power without explanation would have been our only recourse...ie; God.

<<I'm not sure I understand your connection to spiritual meaning. Why would this court system create a desire in me for spiritual meaning? >>

By need for spiritual meaning I am referring to what I believe to be a genetically programmed need to believe in something spiritual. I think you must agree that we all have a deep seeded belief in something spiritual. The header of this thread says replace god not abolish god.

As to how evolution brought this about I would suggest the following.

Co-operation among early humanoids was a key to our survival. The concept what's good for the individual is good for the species is a little shaky in species that depend on co-operation.

After all killing thy neighbor may not work so well if he is a good hunter, farmer or whatever amongst species that depend on one another. Thus some form of order was an evolutionary advantage. When you think about it most of the basic concepts of religion would benefit the stability of the group while stifling the freedom of the individual.

Small groups who evolved the genes for the desire for something spiritual would set the stage for the creating of a crude "court system" with God as judge jury and executioner [rules with heaven and hell as punishment and rewards ] This would have an evolutionary advantage.

Look, even amongst us skeptics while rejecting the ridiculous concepts of organized religion we seek some form of spiritual fulfillment. This in spite of the fact that there is really very little evidence to support a supreme being of any kind.

Considering we consider our selves rational folk where the hell does this need come from?
