Most surge protectors are worth the price you pay for them. That is, the cheap ones don't work well at all and even the expensive ones don't work all the time.

FWIW, my recommendation is a UPS--uninterruptible power supply. Most of those suitable for PC users are sold by APCC (American Power Conversion Corp.) at quite reasonable prices. I think my APC Back-UPS 650 (650 watts or volt-amps) cost me about $150. Not only does it protect against surges but also against outages. With a power outage it automatically shuts the computer down properly so that data are not lost even if the computer is unattended. Most, if not all, of us would rather not lose data!
