I continue to be amazed that a substantial part of Intel's next generation, very limited availability process is being reserved for PIII instead of P4. If AMD announced that they planned to start fabbing their last generation desktop K6-2+ chips on their new .13 process next spring I would be very worried about AMD. They don't have plans to do such a thing. Intel clearly does.

I guess maybe I didn't make my point. P3 shipments can't keep pace with the demand, so intel is using their new process to shrink coppermine die, to get more die per wafer, to ship more die. When Willamette sales justify switching the line over to Willamette, they will.

Your analogy is not quite accurate either. I believe that AMD will not start up their 0.13u process on SledgeHammer, they will start it up on T-Bird. By your conclusion therefore, there must be something wrong with SledgeHammer.

I agree with you completely, and would just like to add that the die size of willamete is rumored to be quite large, so large that some have said it won't be a viable product on a .18 process. That would mean you'd want as much .13 space for this product as possible, since the p3 would have plenty of capacity at .18 where it should be able to be competitive as a low end product it makes even less sense for this to go to .13 unless they might need it for the high/mid end range of processors.

The PIII is a bit more competitive then the K6-2+.

How long after Mustang comes out will AMD keep making the
T-bird?
