Hi kash johal; Re "pin limited". What you say is exactly correct, and is one of the contributing reasons to Intel dumping Rambus. Having the cost of pins drop through the floor has changed the need for high bandwidth per pin technology.

The very high pincount packages are relatively cheap. But because of the high pin density, they tend to increase the layer count in the board you solder them into. Fortunately, extra PCB layers are not terribly expensive nowadays, and I think they're going to get a lot cheaper soon. I believe that the next big thing for industry is PCB capable of much higher signal density (and therefore fewer layers), and that this problem will be solved in the next 12 to 24 months. We are going to see some awesome computers a year or two from now.

Bring on the multiprocessors!
