hiker, to heck with the poor people. G only needs about 10 20 million users, it that many. There are a few million millionaires that will own this phone in this country alone.

Then you have gov'ts around the world, they're really sensitive to price, right?. We already have clients with the phone and they're naturally running costs thru their businesses. That's about a 40% cut right there.

regards,

bt

ps: cdma exclusivity + satellites is about as close to a monopoly as you're going to get.

Wrong. ACeS said that it expected to charge $1.00 per minute. Globalstar in China is charging about $.73 per minute. You were wrongly suggesting the reverse, that Globalstar would be charging "2x, 5x, or 10x" the ACeS rate. Globalstar China is already charging less from what I have read.

In response to:

<<CDMA exclusivity + satellites does not make a monopoly. Just finished reading about the Chinese-American expedition up the K2 summit bordering China and Pakistan. It was sponsored by ACeS who supplied the Ericsson R190 sat phones to the team. We in the western world will not tolerate phone calls with GEO induced latency. But, do you think G* targeted Chinese customer will buy G* minutes at price 2x, 5x, 10x higher than what will be offered by ACeS just to avoid latency? I don't know the expected price of the ACeS minute, but they only needed 1 satellite to cover China, $500 million satellite + launch + ground stations. Costs a lot lower than G*. Due to the relative levels of wealth, I believe that G* has no choice to price competitively in those markets. Remember, G* is counting on the Chinese market to purchase significant minutes. >>

Also, GEO satellites do not have "path diversity" which Globalstar does have. As an active Sat phone user I can tell you that it is of absolutely paramount importance. It prevents dropped calls when moving and makes sat connections very easy when in areas where the sky is mostly blocked. You know how you must aim your DISH or DIRECT TV dishes at a certain angle and direction. This is because they are using GEO sats like ACeS.

Also, I do think that when having a choice of a phone with no latency (no echo) like Globalstar or having a roger-over-and -out-type voice delay with ACeS, people will choose no echo. The delays are very annoying as a previous poster said of Inmarsat use. People want quality like they are used to in regular cell phones. Only Globalstar can offer that...period!
