Ten Here are some more interesting and misleading tidbits from McComas. "In the ceaseless debate over DRAM types, this roadmap update from Intel introduces additional vital perspective. We acknowledge that as the Pentium 4 becomes available, PentiumIII will move solidly to the midrange. The market opportunity for high priced P3 platforms will quickly dwindle – resulting in a quick ramp down of 820 and 840 systems. Demand will quickly shift to the 815 and to third party chip sets. By the end of this year, the market for RDRAM in Personal Computers will be restricted entirely to Tehama (and perhaps Timna - the future of which seems uncertain to us). Over the next two years, Intel’s roadmap indicates that RDRAM will be relegated exclusively to platforms costing over $2000 – dipping below $2000 in the summer of 2002 based on a chip set that is not described at any level of detail." With the PIII now running at 1.1 Ghz. There is no reason why the 820 and 840 with RDRAM will not highly desirable products well in to 2001. Both of these platforms which utilize RDRAM exclusively have dual processor capability. Thus if Willy is restricted to single processor configurations these products will live on. If not then Willy will take over the roles of the 820 and 840 configurations. Now the most ridiculous part of McComas' Summary is "that RDRAM will be relegated exclusively to platforms costing over $2000". There are currently many 820 based systems selling in the $1k to 2K price range. So McComas is dead wrong! commerce.us.dell.com commerce.us.dell.com rcommerce.us.dell.com IMO we will have at the end of the year: 820e 840 Tehama+Willy The start of Timna The 815e the 810 Any DDR machines are going to be "paper tigers".

I'll bet that Willamette is indeed capable of 2-way SMP, but Intel decided to confine Willamette to single processor configs, and make 2-way and above Foster-specific." YOU DON'T KNOW? Say what? Can't you check? This would be a major flaw if Willy wasn't SMP capable wouldn't it....could this be an artifact of the radical design of Willy? Sacrifices SMP for speed? Jim
