NTOP and MSFT - details
Aug. 11, 2000 (LTH - CMP via COMTEX) -- Marking the one-year anniversary of its MSN Messenger Service, Microsoft Corp. recently unwrapped a version of its service that lets users make free PC-to-phone long-distance calls over the Internet to any phone number in the United States and Canada from almost anywhere in the world. The service is provided by Net2Phone Inc. (Hackensack, N.J.), a provider of voice-enhanced Internet communications services. Because Net2Phone's PC-to-phone technology has been integrated directly into MSN Messenger, users simply click to call other Messenger users on their telephone or use the online number pad to dial. Microsoft and Net2Phone will share in revenue from ads displayed on the Messenger user screen. The deal also promises to help narrow the gap between the 91 million users of AOL Instant Messenger, operated by America Online Inc. (AOL, Dulles, Va.), and the 18 million MSN Messenger users.
