Intel Won't Use Rambus in Most Chips for PCs, Web
Site Says
By Cesca Antonelli

Santa Clara, California, Aug. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp., the world's biggest
chipmaker, won't use Rambus Inc.'s memory standard in most chips for
personal computers, Electronic News Online reported, citing ``confidential
documents.''

Intel's new Desktop 2001 Roadmap Update shows that Rambus will only be
used for high-end desktops priced at more than $2,000 starting next year, the
Web site said.

There have been ongoing difficulties with Rambus. Intel benchmarks have
shown that another standard, PC-133, is faster. Other memory-chip makers
had also opposed the plans, saying it was too expensive, Electronic News
said. Intel had planned to use Rambus as the exclusive memory standard for
its Pentium 4 chips, and now an unidentified memory will come in its place in
most PCs.

``This is not new news in terms of what our intentions are,'' Intel spokesman
Howard High said. ``Rambus remains our recommended platform for high-end
applications.'' The company said last month it would support other types of
memory for customers who wanted them.
