That is so true.

Lord of the Flies is (imo) spot on about children. And many adults too, unfortunately.

Empathy is the crucial ingredient in a kind and gentle adult, and I do not believe we are born with it. We are born, I think, with the capacity, but empathy is learned. That is why cults, and some religions and propaganda attempt to kill empathy. It is the ultimate guide for how to treat your fellow man.

My two older children have well established empathy. If I did not have empathy for them, if they had not always been asked about their feelings and treated if they and their feelings were important, I doubt very much whether they would be the kind children that they are. My youngest is still struggling to develop empathy. She is 5. I can see the struggle. It is easier to give in to anger and be mean and hurtful. To be kind, when one is not feeling kind, takes discipline which she simply does not have yet. But since she is MY disciple and I am here to teach I expect eventually she will learn.
