Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd said its board of directors has approved capital expenditures of 48.85 bln twd.

"Such spending is not meant exclusively for this year as part of it will be rolled over to next year," a company official said.

TSMC's parent capex in 2000 remains unchanged at around 3.8 bln usd while total capex including TSMC units and affiliates is at 4.8 bln usd, he said.

The 48.85 bln twd capex is meant primarily to finance the capacity expansion and technology upgrade of the company's Fab 6, Fab 7A and Fab 8A, as well as the construction of its first dedicated 12-inch-wafer fab - Fab 12 - at the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, the company said in a statement.

The monthly capacity at its Fab 6 is expected to be raised to 50,000 8-inch wafers from 40,000 currently, and its technology is expected to be enhanced to 0.13 micron from 0.15 micron, it said.

TSMC also expects to proceed with construction of Fab 12 and installation of process equipment to enable the ramp-up of initial monthly capacity to 10,000 12-inch wafers, it added.

Separately, the board has adopted the audited first-half net profit of 23.58 bln twd and EPS of 2.12 twd on sales of 64.92 bln, which were released July 31, the statement said.

TSMC closed down 2.00 at 131.00 twd on 16.03 mln shares traded.
