<<as soon as two men pull the deer home because it is too heavy for one...and so on. What I'm saying is that working together for true self interest seems a natural corollary of that self interest.>>

I guess what I'm trying to say by co-operation is that to co-operate they must stay together as non combatants.......They may help in hunting but is there a set of rules that keep them from "coveting " one another's wife or stealing possessions? For without such rules they are competitors and it's survival of the fittest. They won't be aiding one another for long. With these rules it becomes survival of the group which was of exceptional value for the species.

<<the idea that cooperation would have to be coerced or enforced in some way...sort of belies some of the nuances of the word. >>

Actually Solon I think this helps make my original point. That is the need for spiritual meaning being related to effective co-operation. Rules being presented through a spiritual context are thus willingly embraced not coerced . The deeper the acceptance of the spiritual the more willing are it's adherents to embrace it's rules. Moral concepts that are embraced because they are believed moral are much more likely to be followed than those that rely on coercion .
