Telenor Telecom to Provide Broadband Aggregation/IP VPN Services in Norway Based on Cisco Systems IP Technology Solutions

New Cisco Research Highlights Growing Importance Placed On Virtual Private Networks by European Business Community

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 2000-- Cisco Systems (Nasdaq:CSCO - news), the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, today announced that Telenor Telecom is to provide its business customers with a wide portfolio of IP-enabled services based on Cisco's end-to-end IP solutions. The value-added services include virtual private networks (VPNs), application hosting and outsourcing, packet telephony and unified communications.

The scalable Full Service Network (FSN) incorporating Cisco's high-speed routers and switches will allow Telenor Telecom to deploy broadband Internet services to business and residential customers. Combining Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology and broadband aggregation, the service provider will also be able to offer remote access broadband IP VPN services to the business community, specifically SoHo, small and medium enterprises and Application Service Providers -- easily and effectively.

This announcement coincides with new research issued by Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, carried out by International Data Corporation (IDC) on the increasing awareness amongst European businesses of the benefits of IP VPNs.

The research, 'Corporate Attitudes to IP VPNs in Europe,' surveyed 500 enterprises across Europe and showed that of those companies over 40 per cent either had or planned on using an IP-VPN within the next year. The companies interviewed anticipated that the volume of corporate traffic running over IP VPN would double within this time frame.

The research highlights the increasing pace of change in the VPN marketplace, with nearly 80 per cent of respondents reporting that they expected the implementation of IP VPN services would be far shorter than other traditional wide area network (WAN) services. This research highlights the vast potential of the IP VPN market in Western Europe which, according to IDC, is forecast to reach $2.4 billion by 2003.

The fundamental business advantage of IP VPNs is that they deliver Intranet and Extranet services at a much lower cost than a private network. Businesses do not need to invest money in building their own private network, instead using a shared, but secure, public infrastructure. Offering a flexible and scaleable backbone, IP VPNs also allow businesses to prioritize voice, data and video traffic travelling on their networks. Service Providers can guarantee network quality and security levels on IP VPNs, reassuring businesses that critical information will be delivered quickly and securely to its destination.

``The New World network and IP VPN infrastructure will ensure that Telenor Telecom's customers will always have the newest networking capabilities to support their business needs -- now and in the future,'' said Paul Mountford, vice president of Cisco's Service Provider line of business in Europe, Middle East and Africa. ``This announcement clearly demonstrates our commitment to provide scalable and intelligent New World networks to the telecommunications industry, and shows the growing importance of delivering value-added IP-based to businesses and residential customers.''

``Developing the New World network gives Telenor Telecom a unique opportunity to bring our customers into the modern world of communications, '' said Ole-Henrik Waldenstrom, acting managing director, Telenor Telecom Solutions.

Incorporating the Cisco 6400 Carrier-Class Broadband Aggregator and Cisco 12000 Series Internet routers, Telenor Telecom's scalable infrastructure will accept data traffic from traditional voice, ATM, Frame Relay, cable, DSL and dial platforms and then transmit the data at high speeds across a highly efficient, distributed packet-forwarding architecture.

The Cisco 6400 will aggregate broadband, as well as dial, remote access traffic and serve as an MPLS edge label switch router. The Cisco 6400 is presently the only carrier-class broadband aggregator device able to deliver broadband DSL remote access into an MPLS VPN service.
