Whatever survives was/is proof that it conferred a survival benefit. The theories (an extension of Darwin's theories) of Gould and Ethridge which have become the main stream of evolutionary thought place a high degree of emphasis on luck. Not all change has survival benefit when confronted with catestrophic events, in such case luck rules. In more normal circumstances change is a disadvantage and the best survivors are those most like their parents. Most species change happens only when the normal order breaks down. TP
