I think there will be a backlash that develops as people begin to understand to what extent they are sacrificing privacy for enhanced service. Also, the more likely scenario is development of special devices, software, and filters to prevent the user-specific information from making it back to the servers. Software similar to proxy servers, anonymizers, and spoofing software will likely show up to prevent ID information from flowing, or faking information to protect privacy. Similar to software today for the internet that generates a fake cookie response each time a user visits a site, a similar program or device could send a bogus ID each time it communicates with the server. If it were to generate a new ID each time it spoke to the server, complete anonyminity could be maintained. In fact, this IS how the system should operate if you ask me. That way, the aggregate information would remain intact (the servers would know how many people were watching filed hockey, how many people were watching a specific show, etc.), but they would not be able to drill down and determine exactly who was watching any show at any time. Aggregate is fine, users will protest specific drilling down to determine exactly their viewing habits, it is happening on the net, and if they try it on TV it will happen there. Advertising will be built into programs is the most likely scenario, which lends value to the GMST business model, since people cannot skip the ads if they are viewing the IPG to determine which show to watch. Therefore, this captive audience will garner advertising budget from major sources. GMST business model looks a little more secure each time I look at it. Regards, JB
