Alcatel's chipsets to my knowledge are made by Alcatel Microelectronics in Belgium. What I am trying to resolve is why the market leader that Ala is in DSL chipsets and DSL deployment, is not involved with the OPEN DSL initiative. It may be as simple as it is a threat to their dominance -- or it may signal a shift in chipset dynamics where some winners may be VRTA, ADI, or our old friend TI, etc. Part of my confusion is with their announcement at Supercomm which seems to fly in the face of a report from a Stephens analyst. Take a look: ****************************************************************************************************** <<"We believe that, in the months to come, ALCATEL’s semiconductor division will begin to leave the ADSL market. This will leave ALCATEL’s equipment unit, which manufactures Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers and Digital Loop Carriers, looking for new suppliers of ADSL chipsets. We believe that Aware’s chip customers, which include Analog Devices Inc. and eight other chip makers, could be in a strong position to win some, if not all, of ALCATEL’s system business. Combined with Aware’s close relationship to major chip suppliers such as Intel Corp., we think Aware and its partners could see their share of the ADSL software market climb above 50%, and possibly much higher, in the next 12 to 24 months." >> (From the Stephens research bulletin concerning AWRE: siliconinvestor.com VERSUS *********************************************************************************ALCATEL LAUNCHES NEW DYNAMITE ADSL CHIPSET First bus-powered 2-chip USB ADSL solution on the market 06/06/2000 Supercomm, Atlanta, June 5th, 2000 - Alcatel (NYSE: ALA) announced that it has added a USB solution to its world leading DynaMiTeTM family of ADSL chipsets. According to the latest market research firm Dataquest*, DynaMiTeTM leads the ADSL chipset market with 52% market share worldwide. ******************************************************************************************************* In WSTL's last 10K the only chipsets they said they were buying were VRTA's. I didn't see mention of TI, ADI, or ALA. If in fact ALA is leaving the ADSL chipset business, who will be the new market leader and market dynamics? Clearly ALA remain strong in DSL deployment of PON Remotes, ATM, CPE and ASAMs All the best, Michael
