At the time of that news release the flaw was just being publicized. I actually heard about it in a radio news cast while on the way to Florida last week. Based on what was said the flaw has been existent from the conception of the Netscape browser but only known to a few. It was just last week that the way to exploit the flaw was being made very available so Im sure the numbers have swelled beyond 1000.

It was said that by adding some code to a web page it would allow the web master to see your files if you just logged onto his page. The bug could also be placed on a users PC by use of an email.

By the above set of known parameters I would guess that a firewall ect would not help but that is only a guess on my part. I personally dont give too much worry over such things because I dont save things on my hard drive that would be upsetting if seen by others. I change my many passwords often.

I had a program running in my profile a month or so ago that would allow me to tell when someone logged onto my SI handle. It would record their ISP address as well. The program is web cam related. Now Im the last person in this world that anyone should fear when it comes to something like that but it was upsetting to a few people so I took the cam out.

My point being that it is possible for a web master to tell quite a bit about someone by them logging a hit on their web page. Me.......I think I'll stick with my charts and my clowning around.

Ill also have a look around some geek sites to see what I can find and will post anything of interest here.

BTW you can tell if you have this nscp bug by clicking this link;

Hi Mark,

I'm not sure about some other personal firewalls, but ZoneAlarm would prompt you that Netscape is trying to act as a file server if you had that particular java applet going.

That would be a heck of a red flag for me.

Cheers,

Rich
