Clappy...in a sort of perverse way, I'd like to say Nixon was my favorite. He was such fun to hate, and made it so easy.

Clappy:

Just hang around the porch and you'll eventually hear (see) many of my stories.

I'm a chemical engineer who went wrong and got into industrial hygiene back in the early '50s. I'm also a sometime toxicologist and have taught both subjects along with air pollution, pathophysiology, and such. Yes, I do know quite a few stories but gee, I can't tell them all at once!

Speaking of all at once. Once upon a time I told Dealer that, although I read this board regularly, I probably wouldn't post much unless people wanted to know something I know about. You've seen some of that today!

-Did you ever meet anyone famous?

Could have and Should have!

Year: 1956 or there about
Location: Meridian, Mississippi
Annual Event: Jimmy Rodgers (father of country music) Memorial Day Celebration. This was the event of the year for all the country stars back then. They volunteered to perform. Many were discovered.......

There were free shows all over and on the out skirts of town.

My girlfriend and I (age 15)attended a theatre show featuring several singers among them was a guy by the name of Gary Williams, (First and last I have heard of him)as a young groupie I thought he was the greatest and gonna be a big star.

To make a long story short he and another gentleman were eating lunch at the Meridian Hotel. I just had to have his autograph and went over to ask him.....not wanting to hold up their lunch I did not ask the other guy...I was totally satisfied. My girlfriend went over and got autographs from both of the guys. Sometime later we were comparing our autographs and the one I failed to get was Elvis Presley. Just before he hit the BIG time.

Fame is an illusive thing -- here today, gone tomorrow. The fickle, shallow mob raises its heroes to the pinnacle of approval today and hurls them into oblivion tomorrow at the slightest whim; cheers today, hisses tomorrow; utter forgetfulness in a few months. -- Henry Miller

Elvis was (maybe is?) an exception!

Thanks Clappy fer asking!

love,

-Who was the best baseball player you ever saw?

Can my answer be a team? Here goes;

The Florida Marlins

Clappy! I got to attend all the World Series home games when the Marlins won the Championship a few years back. Those were the most exciting sporting events I have ever attended. I have always loved baseball. When the Marlins won the 7th game they tore the place apart. It was wonderful. The concrete stadium was shaking from everyone jumping up and down.

A little extra fun came from the fact that it was Voltaire's home team the Atlanta Braves we beat. Rub it in! Rub it in! :-)

It was such a disappointment to see the team torn apart the next year.

Thanks Clappy for giving us the multiple choices. Makes it much easier.

O.K. Who else has a story?

BTW-My favorite President that I can remember: Ronald Reagan

Famous people stories

The two greats who I had the privilege to meet were William Faulkner and Roberto Clemente. I'll never forget begging Clemente to autograph a baseball for me at the door of his green Cadillac when I was a kid. It has rested for years on my television set.

Jane Pauley (NBC) was a good friend of mine and classmate at Indiana University. So I guess I met her. God was she beautiful. I was too intimidated to ask her for a date.

I'd love to say that Clemente was the best baseball player I ever saw play the game. But I think I'm going to have to go with Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle. Mays was truly electric. I'll never forget a first-inning cannon shot that he rocketed over Forbes Field's left field wall one glorious summer afternoon. The most memorable home run I ever saw, though, was launched out of Forbes Field by Henry Aaron within minute after I had snuck into a box seat.

The 1971 Pittsburgh Pirates with Clemente and Stargell will always be my favorite baseball team. I attended game 4 (the Wrold Series' first night game).

The best baseball team in my lifetime, though, was the 1960 Yankees that Pittsburgh beat in 7 games even though the three Yankee victories were by 12-0, 10-0, and 16-3. The Yankee batting average that series remains a World Series record. I was offered a ticket to game 7 but had to go to school.

Jimmy Carter is the finest human who served as President in my lifetime. Ineffective. But human. I will always admire JFK's ability, though, to have coaxed Marilyn Monroe to come in the back door of the White House. BJ Bill gets the bad taste award.

Dustin Hoffman! Meryl Streep!

My finest stunt? Illegally jumping a train to visit East Germany during the communist era. I am SO proud of that stunt!
