Gary I think NT CLEARLY understands the importance of QoS -- hence their 6 billion purchase of Alteon. NT is moving into the ISP/Service Operator world very quickly because they recognize that ability to meter, provision, and control bandwidth at the ISP level will be all-important as the Internet matures and Service Providers are forced to differentiate service levels in order to generate revenue from performance sensitive customers. Right now, Internet has not QoS and everyone is treated equally.........clearly this is not a sustainable business model.

Where we differ is that the network players will be segmented (and is already that way). There will be the Super Carriers that actually own and manage the end-to-end network. Companies like BT, C&W, Global Crossing, 360Net, Colt, Viatel, QWest, etc.etc. are investing billions to build their core network. These companies MUST generate revenue for transporting bits from the Service Providers/Operators that buy wholesale "minutes" or "bits". Yes the per bit or per minute charge will continue to go down as the networking technology improves (optics, 3G), and de-regulation frees the transport market to real competition BUT transport will never be free. In fact the whole notion of QoS being so important for the internet's future is that the transport is NOT free but right now the ISP's have no way to segment/differentiate their service level.
