Yeah, my father's business wasn't passed down to the second generation. It was a great business, rock solid and he netted well into the six figures every year.

Why wasn't it handed down to my generation? What is the great mystery here? Is it that the federal government stole the business when he wasn't looking?

No, what happened is that none of his kids wanted to run the business, so he sold it for several million dollars (no need to agonize for my poor dad, he is enjoying retirement immensely).

THAT is why so few family-owned business are continued by the next generation. It has very little to do with estate taxes.
