Barry W. Re: The memory part of the 820E was completely revised. Among other things, all of the problems that prevented use of more than 2 RIMMs were resolved, and I believe that the 820E supports 4 RIMM sockets

I found this intriguing enough to go download the Intel 82820E MCH data sheet. Here's what I found:

The data sheet is still called the Intel 82820 MCH, dated July 2000
Revision history (page 9 of the pdf file).
Revision history;
Rev-001 Initial release September 1999
Rev-002
..Added Intel 820E Chipset. This change only effected the Overview chapter.
..Removed SDRAM support.
..Minor edits for clarity.

There is a note in the Overview section; (page 13 of the pdf file)

Note: The only component differences between the Intel 820 chip set and the 820E chip set is the I/O Controller Hub.

Sounds like someone may have given you wrong info. Based on this, it seem's that any benchmark improvements would all be related to the ICH. (Or perhaps there's something in the spec. I missed?)

Barry W. re: 820E
I did an 820E motherboard search on the Intel site and they list just one, the ASUS CUC2.
(BTW, it has two RIMM's).
Hopefully Anand will get one and compare it to the ASUS 815E mobo he just reported on. (815E vs 440BX if I remember correctly).
After thinking about the 82820E data sheet, IMO the MCH is the same as used on the 820. The only difference being you can no longer buy a translator for it.
At any rate, we should start seeing some comparisons of the 820/820E/815E, and it'll put that discussion to rest.

Watzman... Yahoo RAMBUS is the only Yahoo thread that I can find that is down. All the other threads seem to be working OK! Could it be that Yahoo has shut the thread down for all the crap that is being posted there by the shorts and bashers? Just a thought. I have written Yahoo awaiting a reply.
