Speaking of Tweak UI,From Win insider:

Tweak UI Is Dead!
Folks, I have it on good authority from the Windows Me team at Microsoft that Tweak UI -- the ever-popular Windows interface control utility -- is dead. You heard me. Microsoft does *not* intend to distribute a final version of Tweak UI 2000. The latest beta of that product, which Microsoft distributed to both Windows Me and Windows 2000 beta testers, is slated to time out next Tuesday, August 15.

But even as the Windows Me team confirmed that Tweak UI 2000, which is written by one Microsoft programmer in his spare time -- and which is not an official Microsoft product (and is unsupported) -- would not be released in a final version on the Microsoft servers to the general public, I wondered whether the Windows 2000 team at Microsoft might have different feelings on this subject. So far, I have not heard back from that Microsoft camp.

Dealing with the Beta
Earlier this year, Insider told you where you could download the August 15 time-out beta from the Internet. As I wrote last week, you should uninstall the Tweak UI 2000 beta before midnight next Monday. If you can't uninstall it before next Tuesday, check this Insider article for how to uninstall it after the fact. You may run into problems, no matter what, if you installed the Tweak UI 2000 beta without first uninstalling a previous version of Tweak UI.

For a lot more about installing the two major previous versions of Tweak UI (for 95 and for 98), please see Winmag.com's Step-by-Step: Installing Tweak UI story.

These older versions of Tweak UI may run on newer versions of Windows, but stay away from functions on the "IE4" tab unless you are running Internet Explorer 4.0. Also, do yourself a favor and don't make any changes on the My Computer tab.

From people who are uninstalling the Tweak UI 2000 beta, I'm seeing a problem trend. Three Insider readers have reported that they uninstalled Tweak UI 2000, but that it didn't uninstall properly. Apparently, the "Tweak UI" item disappeared from Add/Remove Programs, but the Tweak UI applet continued to be present in Control Panel. It's not a universal problem. Tweak UI 2000 has uninstalled just fine for me. But it's something to be aware of. If you have to manually uninstall, these are the files that pertain to Tweak UI:

C:\Windows\System\TWEAKUI.CPL
C:\Windows\Inf\TWEAKUI.INF
C:\Windows\Help\TWEAKUI.CNT
C:\Windows\Help\TWEAKUI.HLP
C:\Windows\Help\TWEAKUI.GID (may not appear)

A quick search of your Registry will turn up four or five subkeys and entries you'll want to delete as well. In particular, be sure to delete services that might be running automatically from the Run and RunServices subkeys.

What Version Do I Have?
If you don't know what version of Tweak UI you have, here's a simple way to tell. If you have two rows of tabs at the top, you have the Win95 version. If you have one row that scrolls to the right, you have the Win98 version. If you have three rows of tabs, you have a Tweak UI 2000 beta. There is more than one flavor of Tweak UI 2000. There were some versions specifically done for Win2000. You may find a "CMD" tab on those versions. According to Insider reader Larry Coots, there was a version of Tweak UI 2000 released on the Win2000 Beta 3 CD that does not time out./I>
