The mystery is not due to lack of effort - thousands of scientists and hundreds of millions of tax dollars have been spent to try to find out. Not true, I know how it works. This disjoint explanation does lead me to realize that it is harder to explain than it should be. It is really quite simple, the next generation is produced by the survivers of the last generation. To understand it takes some thought about what it takes to survive both in the face of competition and when living is easy, and how the dual gene set of DNA allows for a great deal of unexpressed variation to be within each individual.
