Hi jim kelley; Re royalties and engineers decisions'

You wrote: "The cost of the component is of interest to the engineer but it is not broken out into royalties and manufacturing costs."

This is true, but it isn't what I was talking about: "... so maybe Rambus picking up royalties from everybody who uses SDRAM ... #reply-14207249 . The problem is the collection from people who use SDRAM, not from people who make SDRAM.

Since Rambus is claiming royalties on SDRAM controllers, this means that if you design a memory interface to SDRAM, you put your company at risk of being sued by Rambus for royalties. This applies no matter how few of the design you make. You have to get a license from Rambus, or face the courts.

As an example, that is precisely what this thread is talking about Rambus doing to VIA. VIA is not a memory maker. They don't even buy SDRAM. Consequently, the cost of royalties is not hidden from the engineer. Got it now, goofball?

This is something that engineers will definitely take notice of, as it is a cost of the product that is not included in the parts cost.
