Punctuated Equilibrium
Goldschmidt said that evolution could never have occurred thru micro-changes accumulating over
vast amounts of time. He then formulated the "Hopeful Monster" theory - Evolution by leaps
and bounds (Megaevolution). One day an alligator laid an egg and out hatched a bird. A shock
for both alligator and bird!

They got this all wrong. Punctuated Equilibrium is the brainchild of S. Gould and Ethridge. It says nothing about the hopeful monster. It states that reproduction is nearly exact, and variation is both introduced and preserved by sexual reproduction. This means that species will tend to stay as near the same as their parents as possible. They recognize though, that sometimes conditions change so much, a comet, a splitting or colliding landmass, or a great ice age, that the species will be confronted with either quick extinction or a new environment emptied out by all those species that did go extinct. This is when new species arise.
