You said it. Haven't you noticed? All unprofitable trades are the result of a "scam" or a market maker "manipulating" an issue; all good trades, of course, are products of sheer skill and keen intuition. Then again, you have to wonder about what you see and what you don't: most folks aren't as inclined to post their losers as they are their winners.

Many firms like to keep longs and shorts, if they MUST keep positions overnight, in 'balance' (an average dollar volume on each side).

Overnight positions are feast or famine. Sometimes you can win big, and sometimes you can get 'smoked' for a very big loss. Most smaller firms frown on overnight positions (all the ones that I know of).
