Indeed, it seems likely that AMD is limiting is production because of the mobo shortage. Here is a quote from the Q3'99 CC :

...There is another quote says that AMD do all the possible to prevent from building inventory; I can't find it back...


I don't believe that's the case now. AMD can (as Chuck pointed out) keep the chips in the die form, so that they show up in the inventory at cost of silicon wafers (plus cost of processing). Packaging can be done just in time, as the supply of chipsets catches up.
