Dweb,

The title of the article appears to be misleading.

Tellium is developing a hybrid switch called the Aurora, which uses an electronic fabric, and MEMS mirrors to direct wavelengths. My take is that this approach appears to offer great promise. However, MEMS technology is unproven and has a long way to go.

Ciena's CoreDirector is an electronic fabric switch based on ASIC's. Not a hybrid. No announcement, to my knowledge, has been made by Ciena of hybrid switch development. However, I understand that the CoreDirector can readily accomodate the passive optical component when it becomes technically and economically effective.

If I am misinformed on this, please let me know.
