SpeechWorks to Sell System to First Union

NEW YORK (Reuters) - SpeechWorks International Inc. (NasdaqNM:SPWX - news) said on Monday it had signed a deal for First Union Corp.(NYSE:FTU - news), the No. 6 U.S. bank holding company, to use its speech recognition system for telephone transactions.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

First Union's current touch-tone system handles more than 110 million calls a year, SpeechWorks said in a statement. Under the new system, customers will be able to access account information and conduct transactions by speaking into the phone.

``With the addition of SpeechWorks, we can give our customers enhanced services while attracting future customers who realize the importance of quick and easy access to account information and funds,'' said Aaron Gani, vice president and leader of the enterprise call center technology team at First Union.

Under the deal, First Union bought more than 3,700 ports of SpeechWorks software. The system is currently set to begin operating in the last three months of the year.

Shares of SpeechWorks, which debuted on the Nasdaq stock market earlier this month, closed down 18-15/16 at 75-1/2 on Friday. The stock has traded as high as 108-1/2, since its initial public offering priced at $20 per share.
