Are Newport Comm. and NEWP one and the same?

Yes.

It seems like an audacious move for BRCM as I suspect NEWP has a lot of stuff they don't want. In other words, they're buying Nabisco to get their Oreos.

I hope you noticed my error re: Newport Communications.

In other news, this came out on LightReadings' site:

Curious they're calling FBGs new. SDL's had them for eons, and has a patented version that gives stability not found in others. (Essential at higher channel-counts.)

SDL also pioneered the use of fiber Bragg gratings by developing a patented grating stabilized pump module. Grating stabilization delivers superior wavelength stability and enables precise wavelength specification. Both of these performance characteristics are increasingly important as channel density increases in EDFAs for DWDM networks. Wavelength stability is also critical for demanding underseas deployment of 980 nm pumped EDFAs. All SDL standard pump modules feature fiber Bragg grating stabilization.
