I won't swear that South Africa was were the leader in the 50's, but I can not find any reference to Viet Nam and chromium production, for any period of time. USGS was where I got my stats (current and back about 10 years). My mental recollection of my hard-rock geology courses gave me the same impression. That was 20 years ago.

South Africa has extremely unusual geology and is host for a slew of strategic and rare-earth metals, some not found anywhere else in abundance. I'd be willing to see some evidence of Viet Nam as an important source of these materials, but again, if you can't get it out of the ground because of civil conflict, it does you no good.
