SAN JOSE, Calif.--Dell Computer chief executive Michael Dell today extolled Linux as "built to succeed in the Internet age" while taking jabs at rivals Sun Microsystems and Microsoft.

Speaking to a trade show audience here, Dell predicted that the open-source operating system will help the Round Rock, Texas-based manufacturer gain ground against Sun, a high-end rival, and against Microsoft's proprietary software.

Dell later qualified his remarks at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo, saying the leading PC company would continue to support Microsoft products.
