To supply the increasingly domestic demand of communications sector, many companies in the sector are making huge investments in infra-structure. Brazil' network already has 76,000 km with total investments of R$850mil in two years. The Yankee Group research institute predicts investments of US$3bil over the next three years. Cisco, for instance, disbursed US$15.9mil in the acquisition of four companies: Aironet, Cerent, Seagull and Pirelli Sistemas Opticos. The Canadian Nortel recently took over Alteon for US$7.8bil and JDS acquired SDL for US$41mil. Lucent, that used to produce only components and equipment in the country invested US$50mil in a fiber plant to set its local production. The US CIENA, specialized in optical communications system, made a huge contract with Engeredes held by Algar group, expecting an income of US$740mil in 2000 against the US$500mil in 1999. One of the first in the sector, Netstream was recently purchased by AT&T for US$300mil. With earmarked investments of US$200mil, Netstream already installed 30,000 km of cables in Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais state), expecting other 5,000 until December. Intelig announced investments of R$3bil in the construction of its network and Double Crossing that is investing US$2bil in a earth and submarine cabling in South America from which US$500mil destinated to Brazil.
