Sheesh, if taxes are what keep us from anarchy, I'm all for proclaiming them "a good thing".

Is the US a great country? Great means different things.
Obviously in size and power and wealth the US is great. I would say the US is great beyond that mostly because it has a tradition of freedom. Basicly I would say the US is a great country, but it does not have a great government. It has a better governement and more freedom then most countries, but in many ways it is heading in the wrong direction. Effective tax rates have gone up and more and more of our lives is controled by government regulation. A great government (if such a thing exists) would in my opinion have to be on that did a lot less, but did a very good job of protecting our freedom and security. In my post I was reacting to your comment about allowing us to prosper.
In my opinion it is not within the rights of any government to not allow us to prosper. What is worth dying for in a war? That depends on the war. If I had to fight to protect the US what would be worth dying for would be to protect the people of the US from death and destruction, and to protect our tradition of freedom. The bigger the government gets the less freedom there is to protect.
