Peter- great (and accurate) response to Raj. That was a knockout blow, and my bet is that he doesn't respond, although i'd love to hear the explanation of the speed and degradation of GSM with GPRS.

They usually respond with 'ideal' speed numbers rather than 'typical' - a detail which is now becoming more clear.

I agree that comparing 'deals' is irrelevant - it's comparing apples to oranges.

Since Raj always quotes number of deals and ideal speeds - he must be in sales. Problem is that engineers decide this battle. They lose.

>GPRS doesn't have similar speed to 1X. Try less than 1/4 the speed at roll out for both products.

Wrong, Pete. In reality both are 100 – 200 kbits/s.

>CDMAone operators don't need "deals" to implement 1X, it is a simple network upgrade.

Wrong again, Pete. CDMA1 operator needs a "deal" to get 1X (or did you think it comes free, as, er, free lunch?)

>GPRS reduces voice capacity on GSM system

Wrong again Pete. GPRS is packet data which uses the portion of the channel that the voice doesn´t.

>GSM operators are stuck with GPRS

Wrong again Pete. You could choose not to get GPRS, or you could get directly to W-CDMA. This would not make any sense, though, as it is most desirable.

I was delighted to see the other great thinker CRay33 commenting your mail:
